Course description
Gain a fundamental overview of human resources management. Acquire an appreciation and basic comprehension of legislation affecting employees, knowledge regarding the recruitment/selection process, training and development, and managing day-to-day performance.Learner outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to
- define and understand the importance of the human resources function in relation to the roles and responsibilities of a manager.
- develop a basic understanding of the provincial legislation affecting the human resources area and ultimately the impact on managers, such as Employment Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Alberta Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Act, Workers Compensation Act, Labour Relations Code, and Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).
- develop knowledge and skills regarding recruitment and selection, especially the preparation, interview, and follow-up stages of the interviewing process.
- examine the skills required to manage the training and development of team members, including orientation of new staff and the manager's role in the team member's career development process.
- analyze the skills needed to manage the day-to-day performance, ongoing coaching, and annual/interim reviews of team members.
