Course description

Explore the basic principles of copyright, such as public domain and moral and economic rights, in this introductory course. Examine exceptions including fair dealing and different types of licences like Creative Commons. You will be provided with tools to help you clear and track permissions for copyright-protected work.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • identify basic copyright principles.
  • explain the need for copyright laws.
  • identify copyright laws and how they apply to creators and users of content. 
  • discuss types of licences and terms of use information.
  • discuss the options for finding material from various sources.
  • determine important information to include in a permissions letter and permissions log.
