Course description

Learn about the pathophysiology that influences the neonate to diverge from a trajectory toward health. You will gain an understanding of the dysfunctions most pertinent to the neonate.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • identify the neonates who are greatest risk for water and electrolyte imbalances.
  • explore risk factors, clinical manifestations and nursing management of neonatal infection and sepsis.
  • describe the pathophysiologic insults that impact the neurologic system and the neonate's ability to communicate.
  • identify pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic techniques to manage neonatal pain.
  • recognize the impact of legal-ethical dilemmas upon the family and health care team. 

Prerequisites

XNPN 10001 - Neonatal Development and Homeostasis with a minimum grade of C
AND XNPN 10002 - Neonatal Assessment with a minimum grade of C
