Course description

Utilizing the Adaptation-Development Framework for Neonates, examine critical moments that may cause a neonate to diverge from a trajectory toward health. You will focus on the therapeutic modalities that promote the neonate's return to homeostasis.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Apply the mechanisms of hypoxemia to and describe the pathophysiologic features of respiratory conditions seen in the neonatal period.
  • Explain the clinical presentation of congestive heart failure
  • Discuss the flow dynamic principles and clinical presentation of a variety of congenital heart defects.
  • Describe common anatomical and functional abnormalities that interfere with energy balance.
  • Describe complex detoxification and disposal problems impacting hepatic, renal, and gastrointestinal function. 

Prerequisites

XNPN 10001 - Neonatal Development and Homeostasis with a minimum grade of C
AND XNPN 10002 - Neonatal Assessment with a minimum grade of C
