Course description

Be introduced to the basic physiological needs of the neonate and the principles which govern physiological functions pertinent to the care of the critically ill neonate. You will investigate elements that must be in balance to move patients toward optimal neonatal health and development.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • examine the embryologic development of vital systems.
  • describe newborn physiologic function according to the basic needs of oxygen, water, energy, detoxification and disposal, protection, and communication through behaviour.
