Course description
Review the historical and philosophical perspective of the nature, aims and scope of criminal law in Canada. You will develop oral and written communication skills to facilitate legal problem solving, including basic skills in adversarial advocacy, legal research, case briefing, precedent application and statutory interpretation using a teamwork approach.Learner outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to
- develop thinking skills particularly those unique deductive skills employed in law particularly:
- interpreting, accessing and retrieving appropriate sections of the Criminal Code relevant to particular common substantive and procedural situations;
- accessing, retrieving and briefing relevant cases;
- evaluating applicability of law to particular fact situations;
- applying law to particular fact situations
- practice and develop oral and written communication skills to facilitate legal problem solving including rudimentary skills in adversarial advocacy.
- recognize ethical issues and apply skills in ethical decision making regarding commonly occurring situations related to criminal legal procedures.
- employ skills in a team-work approach in dealing with crime.
