Course description

Discover the major theoretical concepts in criminology through an interdisciplinary approach to the study of crime, criminals and criminality. You will become familiar with the jargon and terms used in criminology and historical factors leading to the development of current criminological theories.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • identify and define fundamental concepts and terminology used in criminology. 
  • demonstrate a preliminary understanding of the fundamental principles and the main approaches and theories used in the discipline of criminology. 
  • integrate and apply theory to understanding crime and victimization. 
  • develop an appreciation for an integrated interdisciplinary approach to criminology and the historical factors in the development of criminology. 
  • examine and analyze, at a beginner's level, current events, the media's representation of crime, and the theoretical explanations of crime.
