Course description

Examine the potential causes of or contributors to mental illness in children and adolescents. You will investigate and consider possible and potential social issues that may exist within the child, family or community environment that impact the child's or adolescent’s mental health.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • recognize certain neurological, genetic and developmental factors that may impact children's mental health.  
  • detect some of the environmental factors that impact children's mental health.  
  • identify the different types of abuse and the long-term effects of each of these experiences on mental health.  
  • describe the impact of poverty, homelessness, and discouraging environments on child development and mental health outcomes.  
  • explain the impact of culture on mental health.
