Course description

This course will explore short stories, novels and poetry. Students will compare and contrast the different types of writing and learn about the literary devices and text elements used in each. Students will also be introduced to active reading strategies in order to foster deeper understanding of what they are reading. Reading materials will be provided at levels that are appropriate for each individual student.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • explain how a novel is constructed and how its various elements are interconnected.
  • implement active reading strategies to foster deeper understanding and internalization of novel and short story events. 
  • compare the key characteristics and styles of novels and poetry. 
  • explain how literary devices are used in poems.

Students who are new to TVP Part Time classes must speak with the program team before registering.
