Course description

Examine the nature and structure of families, and the potential impacts on the family unit and individual family members when a family member has an addiction. You will be introduced to how families influence and are influenced by addiction, the power of the family in recovery, and current recommendations for best practices.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • describe the different ways to define family and examine the stages of the family life cycle.
  • examine the impact of active addiction at different stages of the family life cycle, and how family members typically cope. 
  • recognize the potential ongoing impact on family members in the aftermath of living with someone with an active addiction.
  • understand and utilize assessment tools such as the family Genogram and Ecomap.  
  • explore the concept of resiliency and the power of family in recovery and review current practice trends. 
  • identify community supports for families.
