Discover how to utilize social media strategies as professionals. Explore social media strategies for public relations and communications management. You will gain an understanding of how to prepare for and navigate through crisis communications situations.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • recognize the role and impact of social media on public relations and communication management.
  • identify popular social media platforms and how each can be used for organizational public relations.
  • develop and adapt communication for different channels.
  • build, monitor, and manage online communities and conversations using social media.
  • explore a communication plan that integrates social media with other public relations strategies.
  • identify differences between issues and crisis situations.
  • identify the three stages of crisis, components for each stage, and identify crisis communication messaging.
  • identify crisis communication messaging using theories such as Image Restoration Theory and Situational Crisis Communication Theory.
  • compare the roles of social and traditional media during crisis situations.
  • create possible crisis communication messaging for government, business, or an organization

•   This is an online, asynchronous course; it is not an independent study course. There are set due dates for graded and non-graded assessments and students are required to actively participate throughout the course via discussion and other activities.
