Course description

Discover the fundamentals of professional editing and the skills and standards common to all editors. Learn why editing matters and how editing skills can be developed and refined. Be introduced to different kinds of editing, such as copy editing, style editing and structural editing.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • define the core skills successful editors possess.
  • identify the roles and responsibilities of editors in business environments.
  • manage the writer/editor relationship.
  • interpret the different types of editing that editors perform.
  • define common editing and publishing terminology.
  • explain how to use and prepare style guides.
  • manage copyright, references, and citations.
  • manage basic document production schedules and the editor's role.
