VYJO JYYLB - JazzYYC Youth Lab Band
Course description
In a new collaboration with MRU Conservatory, we welcome the JazzYYC Youth Lab Band! Established in 2013 this award winning ensemble is comprised of local youth aged 14 to 20. The JazzYYC Youth Lab Band builds on the strength of the Calgary music and educational community through expert instruction and participation in an advanced jazz ensemble and combos.
Led by Director Jay Michalak, veteran guest musicians work with the band to expand their musical horizons. With a focus on ensemble skills, improvisation, medium/ advanced repertoire and musicianship, the JazzYYC Youth Lab Band benefits students with a desire to enrich their musical experience. Auditions for the 2026-2027 season are now open!
Auditions for the 2026 - 2027 season will take place in-person and virtually. Auditions are required for all applicants, both NEW and RETURNING. Acceptance into the ensemble is based on your audition. The final decisions will be made by the ensemble directors, Jay Michalak & Dylan Weist. Please ensure that you select repertoire and a scale which showcases your capabilities and current level. Acceptance is not guaranteed.
All applicants must fill out the JazzYYC Audition Information Form and select a live audition time or submit a pre- recorded video audition as outlined in the audition requirements linked below. Auditions will take place in June 2026. Please make sure to read all the information carefully and be sure you are aware of the audition requirements.
