Course description

Do you want to take your percussion playing to the next level? Become a more confident and influential member of your school band or orchestra at the MRU Summer Percussion Institute (SPIN). SPIN is a five-day camp designed for percussionists aged 12–18 with experience in band, orchestra, or private lessons. This immersive program helps students strengthen their skills, explore new techniques, and grow as musicians in a fun, supportive, and team-oriented environment.

What makes SPIN unique? Participants receive focused instruction from leading professional percussionists and learn on high-quality instruments found both in the band room and beyond. Students build confidence across a wide range of percussion instruments while developing a deeper understanding of what it truly means to be a percussionist.

Each day includes coaching in orchestral playing, percussion ensemble, and percussion traditions from around the world. The week features masterclasses, faculty performances, interactive workshops, clinics, music activities, and rehearsals leading to a final concert. SPIN fosters a supportive and inspiring atmosphere where students are encouraged to challenge themselves, grow musically, and connect with fellow percussionists.

Our faculty includes professional performers and educators from the Mount Royal Conservatory, University of Calgary, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, and Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

Join us for an unforgettable week of music-making, learning, and personal growth at SPIN — the premier summer percussion camp in Western Canada.

Required: SPIN Survey & Video Submission All participants must complete the SPIN survey and submit a short video (independently or with a parent/guardian) by June 29, 2026. This helps our faculty place students appropriately and prepare the best possible experience for everyone.
