Course description

Develop an understanding of the ethical, legal and regulatory issues surrounding cybersecurity as you learn about security principles, network fundamentals and how to apply these areas to design networks and policies for security and compliance.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • apply concepts of risk management.
  • identify and logically evaluate when to mitigate, avoid, accept or transfer risks. 
  • differentiate between quantitative and qualitative risk assessment.  
  • apply principles of security governance. 
  • assess an effective security program and information security organizational structure, including roles and responsibilities.
  • interpret security policies, standards, procedures and guidelines, business continuity, personnel security and security awareness and training.
  • discuss ethical considerations of information security management.

Notes

Students must enrol in all three courses in the Cyber Security Fundamentals program at the same time.

  • This course has blended delivery. The synchronous component of the course is conducted in a virtual classroom. There are set due dates for graded and non-graded assessments and students are required to actively participate throughout the course via discussion and other activities. Requirements: laptop/desktop computer, stable Internet connection, camera, microphone.
  • Before your course begins, ensure your MyMRU account is activated. Step-by-step instructions for account activation can be found online. Once you have activated your account and have your MyMRU login information, you can log into your MRU Google account using your @mtroyal.ca email address and set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). Help with your Google account can be found online, and help setting up MFA can be found online.
  • All online course work is through York University's online Moodle platform. Course information & Moodle instructions will be available on the MRU D2L Brightspace Learning Management System (LMS) one week prior to the start date of your course.  You must be logged in to your MRU Gmail account to access D2L Brightspace. Your instructor contact info & Moodle access will be made available on/or up to 3 days before the course start date.
