Course description
Learn about the events and pathophysiology that influences the mother or fetus to diverge from a trajectory toward health. You will gain an understanding of the dysfunctions that can affect the pregnant woman and the fetus.Learner outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to
- describe a variety of parameters for oxygenation assessment and the pathophysiological features of hypoxemia in the childbearing woman.
- explain factors which alter oxygen demand in pregnancy.
- identify clinical indications for pharmacological agents used for maternal hypoxemia.
- describe new therapeutic approaches for maternal hypoxemia and cardiac disease.
- discuss the potential impact of pathophysiological changes on the following systems: vascular, hematologic, renal, pulmonary, endocrine, hepatic, neurologic and the utero-placental unit.
- describe the nurse's responsibility in providing appropriate nursing care to childbearing women, neonates and families.
- recognize the impact of ethical dilemmas upon the family and health care team.
Prerequisites
XNPN 10008 - Perinatal Assessment with a minimum grade of CAND XNPN 10007 - Perinatal Development and Homeostasis with a minimum grade of C
