Course description

Examine assessment parameters of maternal-fetal-neonatal development and homeostasis. You will gain the knowledge and skills required to perform physiological and behavioural assessments.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • explore the concepts of family and health within the context of childbearing women and families and the implications for nursing practice.
  • analyze family narratives in order to understand significant themes in the context of childbearing.
  • describe health assessment and physical parameters in each trimester of pregnancy.
  • describe routine and non-routine diagnostic assessment parameters during the pregnancy.
  • state the components and normal findings of the maternal and neonatal postpartum assessments following a vaginal and cesarean birth.
  • understand the underlying physiology for each method of assessment.
  • examine methods of infant nutrition including the breastfeeding experience and formula feeding.
  • explain the principles and sequential techniques essential to newborn resuscitation.
