Course description

Acquire the knowledge and skills required to make comprehensive assessments of the neonate and their family. You will learn to perform an assessment of the prenatal history, birth experience and postnatal extrauterine adaptation.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • explore the concepts of family and health within the context of childbearing women and families and the implications for nursing practice.
  • analyze family narratives in order to understand significant themes in the context of childbearing.
  • state the components and normal findings of a comprehensive neonatal assessment during the birth transition period and beyond.
  • examine the underlying physiology for each assessment parameter.
  • explain the principles and sequential techniques essential to newborn resuscitation.
  • examine methods of infant nutrition including breastfeeding and formula feeding.
