Course description

Explore issues of diversity and justice within Canadian society and assess the workings of the Canadian criminal justice system in relation to minorities. Examine how ethnicity, gender, sexual preference, age and social class has affected access to justice throughout history. You will develop an in-depth appreciation of the link between minority group status and justice in Canada.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • develop and demonstrate a broader understanding of alternative paradigms of minority group status and justice. 
  • critically assess the basic assumptions informing current perspectives on the relationship between minority group status and justice in Canada. 
  • critically assess the workings of the Canadian Criminal Justice System in relation to minorities in Canada. 
  • gain a richer appreciation of the history and current situation of selected minority groups in Canada. 
  • develop an in-depth appreciation of the link between minority group status and justice in the Canadian context through student presentations.

•   This is an online, asynchronous course; it is not an independent study course. There are set due dates for graded and non-graded assessments and students are required to actively participate throughout the course via discussion and other activities.
