Course description

Explore the significant contribution nonprofit organizations make to our communities and economy. You will examine the history, magnitude, issues, trends, and challenges that affect the sector, with emphasis on leadership and management skills.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to
  • discuss the nonprofit sector in Canada including its breadth, diversity, challenges, constituents, and contributions to individuals, communities, and beyond.
  • identify the types of legislation and regulations that affect nonprofit organizations including nonprofit organizations that are also registered charities.
  • explain how nonprofit organizations can demonstrate effectiveness to stakeholders.
  • recognize the variety of resources required to successfully manage a nonprofit organization with a focus on revenue, sustainability, and human resources including volunteers.
  • identify the management and leadership competencies required to successfully manage your own nonprofit organization.
  • describe the role of nonprofit boards and the relationship to the manager.
  • examine factors and influences that challenge nonprofit leadership.
  • formulate your own personal philosophy of effective leadership in a nonprofit organization.
