Explore the fundamental practices of public relations and communication industry professionals. You will develop an understanding of how public relations builds relationships and is professionally planned and practiced in an ethical manner.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • identify principles and practices of public relations and communication management.
  • identify several fundamental theories of communication.
  • describe and explain the public relations/communications planning process.
  • develop an integrated public relations/communications plan.
  • identify professional associations and their roles.
  • apply professional codes of conduct and ethical decision-making to case situations.
  • contrast public relations with similar fields such as journalism.
  • compare the roles of marketing and public relations and their complementary relationship. 
  • identify differences between traditional media relations and social media.
  • experience working on public relations cases individually and in a team.
  • identify employee communication practices.
  • identify communication needs of employees in various types of organizations.
  • describe formal stakeholder consultation practices.

•   This is an online, asynchronous course; it is not an independent study course. There are set due dates for graded and non-graded assessments and students are required to actively participate throughout the course via discussion and other activities.
