Course description

Master the art of evaluating documents from the reader’s perspective to make high-impact decisions regarding structural organization, content flow, and visual design. Using practical examples, you will analyze and solve complex comprehensive editing challenges. By learning to align a document’s overall architecture with its intended purpose, you will gain the skills needed to ensure complex information is clear and engaging for the target audience.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to 

  • evaluate a document to determine structural improvements.
  • create outlines and timelines of existing and revised documents.
  • edit documents to meet length requirements.
  • determine which parts of a document would be more effectively presented in a different format.
  • determine effective headings, subheadings, lists, and captions.
  • write an editor's note that communicates the reasons for editorial decisions.

  • This is an online asynchronous course; it is not an independent study course. There are set due dates for graded and non-graded assessments and students are required to actively participate throughout the course via discussion and other activities.
