Course description

Synthesize your learning and showcase your expertise by developing a professional portfolio that demonstrates your proficiency in copyediting, proofreading, and comprehensive editing. This hands-on course requires you to bring a diverse selection of documents that you wish to refine and include in your collection. You will build a powerful marketing tool that effectively highlights your core editorial competencies, skills, and readiness for the industry.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to 

  • explain ethical and legal issues inherent in the work of editing: copyright, libel, bias, privacy.
  • demonstrate copy, style, and structural edits on a range of non-fiction pieces.
  • analyze findings and resources based on an edit.
  • integrate, reference, and apply the concepts, standards, techniques, and best practices learned throughout the program.
  • compile a professional portfolio that highlights core competencies, skills, and abilities.

  • This is an online asynchronous course; it is not an independent study course. There are set due dates for graded and non-graded assessments and students are required to actively participate throughout the course via discussion and other activities.
  • Before your course begins, ensure your MyMRU account is activated. Step-by-step instructions for account activation can be found online. Once you have activated your account and have your MyMRU login information, you can log into your MRU Google account using your @mtroyal.ca email address and set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
