Course description

Strengthen your foundational writing skills by reviewing parts of speech, syntax, and common grammatical mistakes. You will explore critical sentence components—including words, phrases, and clauses—while mastering the mechanics of proper punctuation, capitalization, abbreviations, and numerical formatting. By identifying and correcting commonly misused and misspelled words, you will build the technical precision and clarity required to produce professional, high-impact communications.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to 

  • identify the eight parts of speech and utilize related reference materials.
  • write grammatically correct sentences and paragraphs.
  • recognize common grammatical mistakes and correct them.
  • identify common punctuation and other mechanics mistakes and correct them.
  • identify commonly misused words and commonly misspelled words.
  • explain some of the key principles of plain and concise English.
  • create editing checklists for revising written work and understand how to use editorial style guides.

  • This is an online asynchronous course; it is not an independent study course. There are set due dates for graded and non-graded assessments and students are required to actively participate throughout the course via discussion and other activities.
