Course description

Acquire basic knowledge of drug classification systems and their physiological effects. You will examine drug dependence, tolerance, withdrawal, methods of administration and motivating factors for drug use. Topics include simple pharmacology and biological factors of the recovery process.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • understand the patterns and prevalence of licit and illicit drug use.
  • identify the various motivating factors for drug use.
  • examine addiction terms including: drug dependence, addiction, tolerance, and withdrawal.
  • explore the methods of administration and acute/chronic effects.
  • distinguish between the major drug classification systems and the effects on the central nervous system.
  • examine the short and long-term physiological effects of drugs.
  • review withdrawal and detox processes for each drug classification.
