Course description
Gain a fundamental overview of human resources management. Acquire an appreciation and basic comprehension of legislation affecting employees, knowledge regarding the recruitment/selection process, training and development, and managing day-to-day performance.Learner outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- define and understand the importance of the human resources function in relation to the roles and responsibilities of a manager.
- develop a basic understanding of the provincial legislation affecting the human resources area and ultimately the impact on managers; i.e. Employment Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Alberta Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Act, Workers Compensation Act, Labour Relations Code, and Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA);
- develop knowledge and skills regarding recruitment and selection, and in particular, the preparation, interview and follow-up stages of the interviewing process;
- examine the skills in managing the training and development of team members including orientation of new staff, and the manager's role in the context of the team member's career development process;
- analyze the skills needed in managing day-to-day performance, ongoing coaching and annual/interim reviews of team members.
