Course description

Be introduced to the developmental changes of the childbearing year, including the physiologic mechanisms that promote growth and maintain homeostasis. You will investigate elements that must be in balance to move along a trajectory toward optimal health and development.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system.
  • Discuss the process of conception and the main features of fetal development in each trimester of pregnancy.
  • Identify the normal sequence of female physiological, developmental and psychological adaptations to the pregnancy and postpartum period by the mother, father and grandparents.
  • Explore the pregnancy experience as a normal and significant life event while considering the unique experience for the woman and family.
  • Describe adaptation, function, and components of the maternal and fetal systems, including: respiratory, cardiovascular systems, renal, metabolic, and protection.
  • Understand the transition of the fetus to extrauterine life, infant behaviors and communication.
