Course description

Explore copyediting and proofreading onscreen and on paper. Explore how to use and create house style guides and style sheets, and recognize the importance of copyright, citations and references. Using examples from a variety of non-fiction material, you will have the opportunity to develop your copyediting and proofreading skills.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe the difference between copyediting and proofreading.
  • Explain the copyediting process.
  • Apply copyediting skills using sample materials.
  • Explain the proofreading process.
  • Apply proofreading skills using sample materials.
  • Describe the importance of style manuals, house style guides and style sheets.
  • Describe how to copyedit tables, graphs and figures.
  • Explain the importance of copyright, citations and references.

•   This is an online, asynchronous course; it is not an independent study course. There are set due dates for graded and non-graded assessments and students are required to actively participate throughout the course via discussion and other activities.
