Course description

Explore the significant contribution non-profit organizations make to our communities and economy. Review the history, magnitude, issues, trends and challenges that affect the sector, with emphasis on leadership and management skills.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • Enhance their knowledge and understanding of the nonprofit sector in Canada including its breadth, diversity, challenges, constituents, and contributions to individuals, communities, and beyond;
  • Gain a general understanding of the types of legislation and regulations that affect nonprofit organizations including nonprofit organizations that are also registered charities;
  • Convey how nonprofit organizations can demonstrate effectiveness to internal and external stakeholders;
  • Raise their awareness of the variety of resources required to successfully manage a nonprofit organization with a focus on revenue, sustainability, and human resources including volunteers;
  • Identify the management and leadership competencies required to successfully manage their own nonprofit organization if they already work in the sector, or for those who do not work in the sector, an organization they will come to know during the course;
  • Understand the role of non-profit Boards and the relationship to the manager;
  • Describe some of the factors and influences that challenge nonprofit leadership; 
  • Put into words the participant’s own personal philosophy of effective leadership in a nonprofit organization

•   This is an online, asynchronous course; it is not an independent study course. There are set due dates for graded and non-graded assessments and students are required to actively participate throughout the course via discussion and other activities.
