Course description

Gain an understanding of the psychotic disorders affecting children and adolescents and be able to discern when further inquiry and support are necessary. Explore childhood-onset schizophrenia, mood and anxiety disorders, suicide and self-harming behaviours.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • recognize and describe signs and symptoms of childhood-onset schizophrenia experienced by children and adolescents
  • recognize and describe signs and symptoms of common anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, trauma and stress related disorders
  • recognize and describe signs and symptoms of common depressive and bipolar disorders
  • describe the factors that may impact risk of suicide and self-harming behaviours for children and adolescents
  • describe helpful interventions and determine when to refer to professionals in the community when working with children and their families experiencing various mental health challenges
