Course description

Discover how to design visually engaging documentation both for print and online publications. By learning how to properly execute visual design principles, typography and effective use of styles, you will design effective and readable technical documents. Put these principles into practice by designing technical documents using MS Word.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe what makes digital publications different from other publications 
  • Distinguish between design and usability 
  • Recognize out of date design trends 
  • Identify essential design principles 
  • Explain the role of typography in effective communication 
  • Identify appropriate layout themes for different types of technical documents 
  • Identify key components of information found in front matter, content matter and back matter 
  • Summarize the elements of document design 

Recommendations

Recommended course preparation: XTBW 10004- Foundations of Technical Communication, XWOP 10011-MS Word for Technical Writers and Editors.

Recommended skills: Strong working knowledge of MS Word, English grammar, punctuation, spelling and style.
