Course description

Develop and refine your writing skills to meet the challenges of a professional workplace environment. Learn how to write clear, concise and dynamic emails, letters and reports with competence and ease. Review common grammatical mistakes, style principles, document design and editing basics.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and use a range of pre-writing strategies: clustering, brainstorming and free writing
  • Write with an appropriate focus on purpose, audience, context and tone
  • Identify and apply the key principles of style: clarity, energy, brevity and flow
  • Recognize and use correct grammar and punctuation
  • Write reader-centred emails, letters and short reports
  • Eliminate wordiness in text
  • Explain the importance of developing strong lifelong writing habits
  • Apply basic principles of layout and design
  • Identify helpful and practical print and online resources
