The Bridge to Early Learning and Child Care Extension Certificate is an online program designed to help English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners explore the role of an early childhood education professional as a possible career working with children and families in Alberta.
This program prepares learners for roles in child care, preschools, school-age care, family child care, or as nannies. For those already working in early learning and child care, micro-credential courses are available to support ongoing professional development.

About the program
The program includes five online micro-credential courses, each lasting 15 hours, that provide a rich, cutting-edge overview of early learning practices in Alberta. These courses cover concepts from the Flight Alberta curriculum framework, integrate intercultural and Indigenous perspectives, and explore the role of the early childhood educator.
Note: The courses are not transferable to other post-secondary institutions through the Alberta Council on Admissions and Transfer and not eligible for Level 1 ECE Certification. For other opportunities, see the "Prior learning assessment and recognition" section noted below.
For EAL learners
For EAL learners interested in an early learning certificate, diploma, or degree, these micro-credential courses offer a valuable introduction to early learning and child care in Alberta. This program strengthens English language and cultural skills to help learners build a strong foundation in essential topics for early childhood educators.
English language requirements
To succeed in the certificate, learners for whom English is an additional language must show proficiency in English. A good understanding of English in reading, writing, speaking, and listening is necessary for completing coursework.
EAL learners are encouraged to take a knowledge self-test. This self-test allows learners to measure their skills independently.
English Language Proficiency testing can be completed in one of the following ways:
- Option 1 - Complete the free assessment on the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks website
- Option 2 - Ensure you meet one of the English Language Proficiencies noted on the English Language Proficiency Requirement-Institutional website.
For current early childhood education professionals
For professionals already working in child care, this program offers a unique opportunity to deepen expertise and stay updated on the latest research and practices in early learning. This program specifically strengthens knowledge of concepts from the Flight Alberta curriculum framework and communication skills, empowering educators to work more effectively with families and colleagues in diverse settings.

NEW –Prior learning assessment and recognition opportunities
Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is a way to give credit for knowledge gained from work, school, or life experiences. This credit can be used towards a diploma or degree at a college or university. The Bridge to Early Learning and Child Care (BELCC) program has been evaluated, so learners may be able to use PLAR credits in different Early Learning and Child Care programs at other post-secondary institutions. This means that learners could save time in their studies by getting credit for what they already know. More information.
