Frequently asked questions
Should I take the Project Management Extension Certificate program or the PMP exam prep course?
If you are new to project management, you will want to focus on taking an educational course or program to learn the fundamentals of the role, the practical work involved and the standards/best practices of the industry. This would be achieved by taking our Project Management Extension Certificate program. If you meet the eligibility requirements to write the PMP® exam, then you will want to focus on taking an exam prep course. This would be achieved by taking our PMP® & CAPM® Certification Exam Preparation Course.
How do I know if I qualify to take the PMP exam?
If you haven't already, we highly recommend that you familiarize yourself with the Project Management Institute (PMI), as this is the governing body for project management globally. They are the only institution that can award PMP® certification, and there are eligibility requirements to apply for the PMP® exam (including demonstrating 3-5 years of experience leading and managing projects).
Who is this program intended for?
The program is designed for professionals looking to make a career change or to obtain formal education to supplement their professional experience. This program covers the fundamental responsibilities of a project manager, the project lifecycle and best practices and standards in project management. Through practical application, students will gain skills that can be applied in the workplace immediately.
Are there any opportunities for micro-credentials in this program?
Yes, students who complete XPRM 20100 Project Management in Construction course are eligible to receive a micro-credential. Our micro-credentials enable recent post-secondary graduates and established career professionals to develop and demonstrate specific skills that employers need.
Are courses in this program Blue Seal or Gold Seal eligible?
All required courses in this program are eligible towards the Achievement in Business Competencies (Blue Seal) Certificate. The XPRM 20100 Project Management in Construction course is Gold Seal eligible.
What type of career options are available if I complete this certificate?
Potential roles include project coordinator, project administrator, assistant project manager, junior project manager, and project analyst.
Note: additional education and training may be required for some positions.
Do I have to take the courses in order?
No, each course is designed to stand alone. However, we strongly suggest that you take XPRM 10101 Introduction to Project Management as your first course. Students should not enroll in XPRM 10106 Project Management Capstone until they have completed all other courses in the program.
How will I be graded in each course?
Each course has several graded assignments. These assignments vary per course; however, they are all designed to assess the outcomes of each course. These assessments include, but are not limited to, group projects, discussion board posts, short answers and quizzes. Please note that for in-class courses you may be required to complete an assignment in the evening between classes or online after the last day.
How many hours am I expected to work on each course?
You should plan to access your D2L course site at least 3 times per week. Depending on the course, you can expect to spend approximately 6 hours per week reading material, completing learning activities or assignments, and attending Google Meet sessions.
Is attendance required for Google Meet sessions?
If you take a live, online course, attendance at Google Meet session(s) is mandatory. If you take an online course, the session is not mandatory, but it is recommended. Attending Google Meet sessions allows you to get to know your instructor and classmates and provides you with the opportunity to ask questions about content, assignments or due dates.
How many courses can I take at a time?
You can take as many courses as your schedule will allow. There are no restrictions on the number of courses you can take at one time. You may be eligible for a 5% discount if you register for 3+ courses in a term.
Will I get a job once I'm done the certificate?
While having a professional certificate will certainly put you in a favourable position when looking for employment, there are many factors to consider for each individual that it would be impossible to pre-determine your employment success. Our graduate statistics have shown that a significant percentage of past students have experienced a measurable increase in salary, responsibility, and/or activity after completing our programs.
Will Mount Royal help me locate career opportunities?
No, Mount Royal does not have a system in place to assist students with career opportunities upon completion of our certificate. However, there are periodic job postings advertised on our website.
