‘IUDs & Implants: A LARC Workshop’ offers healthcare professionals an in-depth training experience focused on long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), including intrauterine devices (IUDs) and etonogestrel subdermal implants. The course covers essential techniques for insertion, removal, and troubleshooting, providing participants with practical skills that can be applied immediately in clinical settings. In addition to hands-on procedural training, the workshop addresses the latest evidence-based guidelines and patient counseling approaches to ensure comprehensive contraceptive care.
Learning outcomes for this workshop include gaining proficiency in LARC insertion and removal techniques, understanding potential complications and how to manage them, and enhancing patient communication skills to support informed contraceptive decision-making. The course is structured to meet the needs of both beginners and experienced practitioners looking to update their skills with the most current practices in the field.
The course is delivered in-person as a one-day workshop. You will also complete an online lecture and assessment prior to the in-person workshop. You will require a laptop/desktop computer and stable Internet connection to review the pre-workshop materials.

Presenter
Renee Hall, MD
Dr. Renee Hall is a Clinical Associate Professor at UBC who has been working in the area of family planning in Vancouver for 25 years. She completed her fellowship in Women's health and family planning at UBC. She is the Medical Director of Willow Reproductive Health Centre. She provides first and second-trimester medical and surgical abortion and training at the CARE program at BC Women’s Hospital, Everywoman’s Health Center, Elizabeth Bagshaw Clinic and Kelowna General Hospital’s Gynecology Services Clinic. She developed this MRU program and is the director of the UBC CPD IUD and contraceptive implant training program.

Konia Trouton, MD BSc CCFP MPH FCFP
Dr. Konia Trouton is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Practice at UBC, and a Clinical Associate in Women’s College Hospital in Toronto, Ontario. She is a Clinical Instructor at University of Calgary and the University of Toronto. She completed medical training at the Queen’s University, residency in Calgary and holds a Masters of Public Health from Harvard. With over 20 years of experience in reproductive health care across British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and New Brunswick, she is now based in Ontario, where she actively engages in research, teaching, and professional training. A co-author of several peer-reviewed publications, she has contributed to virtual and in-person training programs on long-acting reversible contraception, emergency contraception, and abortion care at regional, national, and international levels.
Rupinder Toor, MD BSc CCFP FCFP
Dr. Rupinder Toor is a Family Physician and founder of The IUD and NE Women’s Clinic in Calgary, Alberta, which has provided culturally sensitive care to over 100,000 women since 2007. She is also the founder of Project EmpowHER, a non-profit advancing awareness and access to long-acting contraception for vulnerable women and girls. Dr. Toor completed her medical degree and BSc (Honours) in Biochemistry at the University of Calgary, followed by Family Medicine training at the University of Western Ontario. A TEDx Calgary speaker, she and her team successfully advocated for universal access to free prescription contraception in Canada in 2024. Nationally recognized for her work, Dr. Toor has received awards, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and was named the Cumming School of Medicine Alumna of Distinction.
