Course description

This course is intended as a more in-depth exploration of musical composition in an optimal small group setting
which allows for group instruction, peer collaboration, and individual instruction and feedback. Having previously
taken some level of instruction in music composition, students ages 11-16 will create original, notated musical
works for their own instrument as well as those of others in their class with the potential for live performances,
readings, or recordings at the end of each term.

In addition to working on assignments and creative projects, participants will study works by composers from the past 300 years of the Western classical tradition, seminal works representative of a diversity of styles in the 20th century, and a sample of works by living composers.

The course will be a combination of both assigned and self-directed projects, feature classes with guest clinicians,
and give participants free access to a selection of local new music events.

This course is more technically demanding of the composers than “Introduction to Music Composition”.
