Course description

The curriculum provides an introduction to the current early learning and child care landscape in Alberta including a general overview of the types of programs, governance, role of Early Childhood Educators, and theories that influence practice.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • identify the different types of programs where Early Childhood Educators may work.
  • define the role of Alberta child care licensing and the national child care framework in early childhood education.
  • list values and core concepts from Alberta’s early learning and child care curriculum framework: flight.
  • recognize the Convention on the Rights of the Child, United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in relation to Early Childhood Educators.
  • recognize a variety of different theories that support children’s development and learning.
