Course description

Directed by Rob Hutchinson, this dynamic big band will provide young musicians with an incredible opportunity to hone their skills, explore the art of improvisation, and immerse themselves in traditional, contemporary, and cutting-edge jazz styles. Under the guidance of an expert director and surrounded by a vibrant community, participants will grow as musicians while collaborating with like-minded peers.

Whether you’re an experienced player or just beginning your jazz journey, this program is your gateway to growth, performance, and creativity in an exciting and supportive environment. With weekly rehearsals, inspiring workshops featuring guest artists, and thrilling live performances, your jazz adventure starts here!

Section Notes

Please note this is a full year section for students registering from September 2026 - May 2027. 
You DO NOT need to register again in the Winter. 
  • Please note that an audition is required before registering for this ensemble.
  • Hours are inclusive of all rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and concerts.
  • A detailed schedule will be received upon acceptance.
  • No rehearsals March 24, 2026 and March 31, 2027.

Auditions for the 2026-2027 season are now open!

Auditions for the 2026 - 2027 season will take place in-person and virtually. Auditions are required for all applicants, both NEW and RETURNING. Acceptance into the ensemble is based on your audition. The final decisions will be made by the ensemble directors, Jay Michalak & Dylan Weist. Please ensure that you select repertoire and a scale which showcases your capabilities and current level. Acceptance is not guaranteed.

All applicants must fill out the JazzYYC Audition Information Form and select a live audition time or submit a pre- recorded video audition as outlined in the audition requirements linked below. Auditions will take place in June 2026. Please make sure to read all the information carefully and be sure you are aware of the audition requirements.
