Course description

Gain practical classroom experience in a K-12 classroom. Focus on observation, inquiry and reflective planning, and understand the roles and responsibilities of an education assistant.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • explore the relationship between practice and theory in education.
  • recognize the application of the policies, regulations, and procedures within the classroom environment. 
  • identify elements of the "Rights and Responsibilities of an Education Assistant" in the classroom.
  • examine the roles and responsibilities of teachers, education assistants, and students in the classroom.
  • examine the varied curricular and philosophical structure of a teaching plan.

Section Notes

•  This practicum consists of 90 practical hours in a school setting and participation in an online D2L learning community. Students will be placed in a school setting by Mount Royal, Tuesdays & Thursdays, February 4 – April 3, 2025 (Note: no classes February 13 for Teacher’s Convention; March 25 & 27 for CBE Spring Break). 

•    Before your course begins, ensure your MyMRU account is activated. Step-by-step instructions for account activation can be found here. Once you have activated your account and have your MyMRU login information, you can log into your MRU Google account using your @mtroyal.ca email address and set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). Help with your Google account can be found here, and help setting up MFA can be found here.

•   Course content will be available on the D2L Brightspace Learning Management System (LMS) 3 days before the course start date. You must be logged in to your MRU Gmail account to access D2L Brightspace. Your instructor will be available on the course start date.
