Course description

Be introduced to the current early learning and child care landscape in Alberta. You will gain a general overview of the types of programs and governance, role of the Early Childhood Educator, and the theories that influence practice. You will also be provided with support for English vocabulary, oral communication, and practice of writing skills to strengthen English as an Additional Language learner competence and confidence.

Learner outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • identify the different types of programs where Early Childhood Educators may work. 
  • describe the role of Alberta child care licensing and the national child care framework in early childhood education. 
  • compare their own values to the values and core concepts from Alberta's early learning and child care curriculum framework: flight.  
  • discuss the Convention on the Rights of the Child, United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as it relates to Early Childhood Educators. 
  • recognize a variety of different theories that support children's development and learning.
